Ben Powney - Driver

Ben Powney began his motorsport career in karting aged 25 going on to represent the UK at the Sodi World Series. Following a successful spell in karting, Ben made the jump to Locost within the 750 Motor Club. He became team champion in 2016 with Matt Graux in their first season together competing. After numerous podiums and race wins, the Locost car was converted to the newly-formed Ma7da championship.

Ben Powney has enjoyed notable success in the Mazda 7 Championship (MA7DA), a popular and competitive club-level motorsport series featuring the Mazda 1.8 engine in a Locost chassis. This series is known for close, competitive racing with a large field of cars, and very talented drivers. Twice being a runner-up, Ben finally secured the elusive championship title in 2024, picking up 5 race wins and 7 podiums along the way from 14 races.

Powney’s most well-known involvement has been in Formula Ford, one of the most respected entry-level single-seater categories in motorsport. Formula Ford is renowned for providing a platform for young drivers to develop their skills before moving on to more competitive and higher-profile series like Formula 3, Formula 2, or even Formula 1.

2025 is Powney’s first full season in Formula Ford.

Jamun - Car constructor

Jamun Racing, founded by Tony Munday, is a prominent car constructor, known best for its success in the Formula Ford Championship. Established in the early 1970s, Jamun Racing has a rich history of designing and building competitive Formula Ford cars. The Jamun T2, introduced in 1970, was their first race car and marked the beginning of their success in the 1980s. ​

Under Tony Munday's leadership, Jamun Racing has achieved significant success in various Formula Ford championships. Notably, in the 2003 British Formula Ford Championship, Jamun Racing secured victories with drivers like Ben Clucas and Alex Danielsson, showcasing the team's competitive edge. In 2010, Jamun Racing continued its strong performance in the British Formula Ford Championship, finishing first in the Championship Class and second in the Scholarship Class. ​

Throughout its history, Jamun Racing has been known for its commitment to excellence and innovation in the Formula Ford series, solidifying its reputation as a leading constructor and team in the motorsport community. Two cars that have stood out in their history is the 1971 Jamun T3 which is eligible for competing in Historic Formula Ford with the Historic Sports Car Club (HSCC) and the 1992 M92 which is eligible for the British Racing Sports Car Club (BRSCC).

PA Motorsport - Team

Peter Alexander, based in Folkestone, Kent, is the owner of PA Motorsport, a company specialising in the restoration and maintenance of classic Formula Ford cars. His expertise has been instrumental in bringing historic vehicles back to competitive racing standards.

One notable project was the restoration of a Jamun T3 Formula Ford, a model originally produced in 1971. After nearly three decades, this car was restored by PA Motorsport and returned to the track, exemplifying Alexander's commitment to preserving racing heritage.

In addition to his restoration work, Alexander has a history of racing Jamun cars. In the late 1990s, he competed in the BRSCC Kent County Formula Ford Championship, driving a Jamun M92 equipped with a Zetec engine. His involvement in these events underscores his deep connection to the Jamun brand and his active participation in the Formula Ford community.

Furthermore, Alexander's acquisition of Macon Race Cars in January 2004 highlights his dedication to the preservation and support of classic racing cars. By obtaining the rights to Macon, he ensured that owners of these vehicles could access genuine spare parts, thereby maintaining the integrity and performance of these historic machines.

Through his restoration projects, racing endeavors, and commitment to preserving classic racing cars, Peter Alexander has established himself as a significant figure in the Formula Ford community, with a particular affinity for Jamun Racing cars.

Challenges and Future

Like many teams in club level motorsport, they have faced challenges, especially in securing the necessary funding to advance to higher levels. Financial backing is often a limiting factor for drivers in categories like Formula Ford, where sponsorships and personal funding play a key role in allowing drivers to compete regularly. Ben’s career has primarily been centred on smaller teams, where he has built a reputation as a solid, competitive driver, and he continues to be involved in the grassroots motorsport scene.
